Email is the most convenient way to communicate in writing in today’s busy, technological world. By having email accounts, you can access your messages or write new emails from anywhere as long you have a computer/iPod and internet access. There are many great free web-based email accounts offered including Comcast, Gmail, Yahoomail, Juno, Earthlink, and Eudora, among others. You don’t have to pay a single cent to register with any one of them plus you may enjoy all the benefits in many ways.
Thing you will need before opening an email account.
- INTERNET ACCESS, whether at home, internet café or other places.
- A UNIQUE ‘LOG IN’ NAME for your email address. Look at this example. yourname@gmail.com. ‘yourname’ is your log in name used every time you access your email account. The email provider will help you with this. Tips: Most email providers will need you to enter user name in order for you to access your email account. Luckily, instead of typing full email address, providing log in name is normally sufficient.
- PAPER AND PEN/PENCIL for jotting down log in name, user name, passwords, etc.
- ACCESS YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNTS at least once a month.
Instructions
- Open a web browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer. Go to a search engine such as Google or Yahoo and type in, "free email" and click search button. The search engine will display many email offerings. Look at each offering that interests you and click on one or two. Tips: Other easy way to chose email provider is by asking your colleagues as to which email they have ever used. They may also share about some special features such as user-friendly and spam protection.
- Before opening new accounts with any email provider, read the terms and conditions and privacy statement on the email provider's website. If you find anything don't agree to, don't sign up. Use back button to browse other different providers that might suit your needs. Keep doing this until you find an email provider that suits you.
- After you find a suitable one, follow the instructions to register for free email of your choice. Make sure to note your EMAIL ADDRESS (e.g.; yourname@gmail.com), PASSWORD, and how to access your account. You will need to enter your user name and password every time you need to access you account.
- Practice opening your email and learning how it works.
- Spend some time to study many features offered. You can add your friends address and their personal particulars in ‘contact’ folder. You may use chat box to chat with your contacts. You can set up filters in any email program that will help regulate spam. Spam is defined as unwanted advertising email.
Extra Tips
- After signing up for email, and let your colleagues or contacts know as soon as possible what your new email address is, so they can add your address to their email address book. Otherwise, any email you send may end up in the trash or the Spam folder.
- You may open personal email address as many as you like depending on your needs. There is no rule that you only need ONE email address. If you use business email address for your business or office works, it's a good idea to have a different email address for personal interactions.
- Make sure you ALWAYS close the browser (e.g.; Mozilla, Internet Explorer, Safari etc.) after accessing/using your email. This will help prevent other internet users reading your personal business.
